Course Rationale
     The design of this programme has been necessitated by the need to make the curriculum reflect and respond to the changes in the society, as emphasized in various educational fora in the University. Issues addressed in the designed curriculum include:

  1. Harmonization of the teacher education curriculum with the current revised secondary school curriculum.
  2. Making the curriculum manageable and evaluative by removing overloads and overlaps.
  3. Infusing and integrating contemporary issues in order to make the curriculum more responsive to the needs of the society.
  4. Incorporating industrial and technological development.

Why Study the Programme

  1. Consolidate and reinforce the student's knowledge of secondary school Mathematics.
  2. Use available teaching and learning resources efficiently and improvise for what is not available.
  3. Address contemporary and emerging issues in society including changing technology in the teaching of Mathematics.
  4. Demonstrate methodologically and systematically, their practical skills, and abilities in controlling, conducting, and administering various institutions as school heads.
  5. Build, and nurture students and members of the teaching staff professionally towards educational development of the people of Kenya.
  6. Equip learners with both theoretical and practical skills in the field of Education, Science and Technology.


Target Groups
In fulfilling the gaps identified, all subjects taught in secondary school has been reviewed in addition to professional and support subjects offered in DTE colleges. Entrepreneurship has also been introduced.  In order to respond to the contemporary issues in the society, the designed curriculum has accommodated HIV/AIDS pandemic, drug and substance abuse, environmental education, human rights, integrity and gender awareness. In response to the modem advancement in technology, the revised curriculum has incorporated Information Communication Technology (ICT) as a teaching and learning tool.

Programme Objectives

  1. Develop tools of evaluation and assessment in Mathematics.
  2. Make and review teaching and learning materials.
  3. Acquire mathematical knowledge well beyond form four as a basis for further education.
  4. Acquire competencies required to teach Mathematics.
  5. Address contemporary and emerging issues in society including changing technology in the teaching of Mathematics.

Entry Requirements
The following shall be the minimum admission requirements for registration in the DTE Programme which in no way entitles the applicant to a place in the university. In addition, candidates shall be required to fill in specific admission requirements of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction to which they have applied for.

  1. Mean C+ and above or its equivalence from any other public or private university recognized by the Commission of Higher Education (CHE).
  2. For the purposes of this regulation, approved subjects shall be such subjects as senate shall from time to time determine.
  3. Candidates must give name and full address of a referee who is a person conversant with University Standards- preferably a graduate and who is well placed to assess the candidate’s potential as a University student. Candidates shall also be required to ensure that the referee has consented to report on them, and that their addresses are correct.
  4. No candidate, who has previously attended any University shall be admitted to the DTE course under these regulations, for which they failed to qualify during their previous attendance, unless they produce evidence of further study satisfactory to the University.

Seven (7) Trimesters, 7sessions  (School based).
