Bachelor of Arts in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution

Course Rationale

Generalizations about conflict and warfare claim that conflict is inevitable in human organizations. Yet there is a dearth of scholarly attempts to understand the nature, causes, course and the varied impacts of conflict, or of ways to bring about peace in the context of an internationally accepted legal regime.

Why study the programme

  1. Prepare students to contribute to the creation of justice, equitable, and peaceful conditions
  2. in  the  world  through  understanding the  complex  dynamics  of  conflict  and  peace  at interpersonal, organizational, societal, and global levels of human interaction.
  3. Provide students with analytical skills and expression competencies for pursuing careers in human rights, conflict resolution, peace-related endeavors, and more generally in responsible undertakings in a wide range of professional settings, e.g. teaching, research and formulation of fundamental policies on conflict and peace.
  4. Provide an appropriate background for students interested in advanced study in peace and conflict or related fields.
  5. Enable students to become professionals in teaching, research and formulation of policies in areas of conflict and peace.
  6. Enable students to acquire in-depth knowledge of the multifaceted nature of conflict and peace.

Target Groups
The changing nature of warfare from traditional to modern with the growing sophistication of weapons  and  their  capacity to  destroy calls  for  a  thorough  examination of  warfare  and  its technologies through time. In the recent past, warfare has expanded its scope and the involvement of civilians has become more and more commonplace than hitherto. Alongside war the quest for peace has been with humans throughout their history.   An understanding of conflict and its resolution it is hoped will form a basis for the creation of a culture of peace among peoples from various backgrounds, with the ultimate goal of attainment of global peace. Hence the Bachelor of Peace Studies and conflict Resolution by Mount Kenya University.

Programme Objectives

  1. Prepare students to contribute to the creation of justice, equitable, and peaceful conditions

Entry Requirements
The entry requirements set out below must be regarded as minimum a requirement which in no way directly entitles an applicant to a place in the university. The following requirements must be fulfilled: -

  1. KCSE certificate with a minimum of C+ or higher and grade C+ (plus) in relevant subjects.   Or
  2.  KACE certificate with a minimum of the two principal passe Or
  3. Diploma in relevant disciplines in the field of social sciences from an institution of higher learning recognized by the Mount Kenya University Senate.Or
  4. P1 and a minimum of C plain in KSCE with two years teaching experience.

In addition, applicants are required to meet the specific requirements of their degree courses.

Exemptions and credit transfers
Credit transfers and exemption are possible depending on the qualification of the applicant. The applicant must have attained the pass mark in the subject to be considered for credit transfer/ exemption from an institution recognized by the Senate. The maximum number of credit transfers given must be determined from time to time by the university Senate.
