Kenyan youth should be encouraged and supported to start their own income generating initiatives instead of waiting for the elusive employment, MKU vice chancellor Prof.Stanley Waudo has said.
Waudo made the remarks at MKU main campus in Thika while presenting a brand new motor cycle to a former animal health and production student Festus Mwenda Mwandegwa, 26 who graduated with a diploma in animal health and production and certificate in artificial insemination in 2010.Waudo was representing MKU board of trustees chairman, Simon Nyutu Gicharu.
Prof Waudo said Kenyan youth ought to be innovative and great thinkers instead of being job seekers. He said unemployment in this country was a very major challenge.
He said statistic shows that only 2% of all secondary school leavers get white colour jobs. “There is therefore an urgent need to great informal employment for our youth,” said Waudo.
The head of the department Dr Dominic Muriithi commended the board of trustees led by chairman, Simon Nyutu Gicharu for donating the bike to his former student saying it would serve as an incentive.
He said his department now had 500 students .He said the recipient would be now self reliant and would lend services to many.
Mwandegwa said he had approach MKU board of trustee chairman Simon Gicharu last week for a loan to purchase a bike only to be offered one yesterday.
“MKU has made me to be what I am today,” he said while receiving his machine valued at kshs 100,000.
Mwandegwa urged other students to emulate him by being job creators and not job seekers.
