The School of Business and Public Management has a population of more than 12,000 students. The School of Pharmacy at Mount Kenya University (MKU) is accredited by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB), the Pharmacy regulatory authority in Kenya in accordance with the Pharmacy and Poisons Act (CAP 244).
Mount Kenya University targets at providing science and technology education as a major vehicle for attaining and sustaining in dustrial development of Kenya which is consistent with the vision 2030 Economic Pillar. The University has various schools among them the School of Pure & Applied Sciences.
In line with the university’s vision and mission, the School of Pure & Applied Sciences aims to develop centers of excellence in the training of engineers, technicians and para-veterinarians to raise the skill competencies, and the numbers required to make Kenya a competitive industrializing nation.
The School of Social Sciences was established with a mission of offering internationally recognized and acclaimed undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral study opportunities.
Besides training programmes, the School is a rapidly growing centre of excellence in research and community outreach, with its staff members involved in various projects that greatly compliment its academic programmes.
The Board of Postgraduate Studies is vested with the responsibility of formulating and implementing policies governing postgraduate training. Emphasis of MKU is high quality education and training of job creators.
In October 2012 the Vice Chancellor, MKU appointed a Postgraduate Taskforce. Among the issues addressed is how to deal with any matters related to enhancement of quality and relevance of MKU postgraduate training.
With the granting of a license by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board in May, 2014 Mount Kenya University became the third private university in Kenya to be accredited to offer the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery course (MBchB).
The accreditation was epiphany for an institution, which since inception, has strived to offer programmes in Health and Applied Sciences, which are very competitive. “The Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board, having inspected the institution is satisfied that the university has put in place the requisite infrastructure facilities and relevant faculty to offer this course,” said Prof. George Magoha, Chairman of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board in his accreditation letter to MKU.
The university admitted its first batch of 52 students in September, 2014. Prior to seeking accreditation, it had put in place the requisite faculty and infrastructure. The infrastructure includes “a modern anatomy/ funeral home at the Thika Level 5 Hospital where the doctors will undertake their clinical training.” The School of Medicine is headed by Prof. Kimathi Kigatiira, who has been a medical doctor for over 33 years.
