MKU’S UNAI SDG10 HUB On Reduces inequalities marks the international day of family remittances

The steady rise in persons migrating to work abroad and its positive impact in contributing towards reduced inequalities is a vital reality in today’s world. We are all aware of the nurses that have been recruited to take up jobs in the UK, others in the USA, Germany and else where. The list of such examples is long.  The overall impact of remissions made by those persons back home is marked by United Nations as the International Day of Family Remittances.  Available data shows that in 2022, over 200 million migrant workers sent US 626 billion dollars to their families living in what is today referred to as remittance-reliant countries.

This phenomenal financial contribution is observed by United Nations through the International day of Family Remittances which is observed annually on 16th June.  The receipients of the family support have their fortunes changed, thanks to their relatives abroad.  Evidently, more and more of these remittances are taking place through digital platforms.  On the overall, the status of life of persons in remittance-reliant countries keep on improving and the achievement of SDGs with a special reference to SDG10 on Reduced Inequalities is witnessed. It is on record that over 800 million family members are the receipients of this support.  According to the World Bank’s Migration and Development Brief (2023) remittances to low and middle income countries are expected to rise by 4.2% this year(2023).

For any country, when the community is given access to education and their status is improved, they raise the likelihood of migrating across the national borders to work and add to the annual remittances.
