Mount Kenya University’s 6th Graduation Ceremony was held today. Over 5,000 students graduated from university’s different Schools in the event themed “Setting trends in nurturing innovators and entrepreneurs for achievement of Vision 2030.”
Hon. Dr. John Muyingo, Minister of State, Higher Education, Republic of Uganda, was the chief guest. This was the university’s first graduation to be held mid-year, and comes at a time when the institution has embarked on a rapid expansion of its faculty, academic programmes, and physical facilities.
Dr. Muyingo, in his address on the “role of universities in regional integration”, hailed Mount Kenya University (MKU) for being a role model in promotion of public-private partnerships. “These efforts will make immense contributions to the training of health students and development of human capacity,” he said in reference to the existing partnership with Thika Level 5 Hospital, Kiambu County, which saw the construction of the Ksh300 million General Kago Road Funeral Home/Anatomy Lab. Come October this year, MKU will host the National Water Summit in Turkana County, another example of a public-private partnership. The event is co-organised by the County Government of Turkana.
Dr. Muyingo said such partnerships should be scaled up to regional level. “Increasing regional co-operation and integration is viewed as a key strategy for enabling individual states to overcome challenges such as political fragmentation, small markets, poor terms of international trade and the legacy of colonialism and post-independence conflict, thereby paving the way for greater economic growth and social development.” He said universities have an enormous role to play in the on going quest for full East African Community regional integration by providing academic leadership through research into critical areas of national development, developing human resource capital, and providing advisory or outreach services to governments.
MKU is the largest private university in East Africa, both in terms of student numbers and regional footprint. It has 12 campuses in Kenya, one in Kigali, Rwanda and another in Hargeisa, Somaliland. “We are continuously expanding our academic facilities as the demand for our academic programmes, and student numbers grow,” said Vice-Chair of the MKU Council Prof. Grace Njoroge. She said this expansion is coupled with academic partnerships with several other universities to enhance academic excellence and benchmark quality of training. MKU has partnerships with the University of Cincinnati, Xavier University and Northern Kentucky University, all in the USA.
Prof. David Some, Chief Executive Officer, Commission for University Education commended MKU for adhering to the rules governing university education, as outlined in the Universities Act, 2012. He said MKU is one of the few universities that have met all the requirements.
MKU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Stanley Waudo said the university will establish an Institute of Petroleum Studies and Renewable Energy to be based at MKU Lodwar Campus, Turkana County. The institute will develop human resource that will facilitate exploitation of unexplored geothermal, wind power, water aquifer, hydroelectric power and oil wells.
Recently, the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board accredited the MKU School of Medicine, which will offer Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) programmes beginning September this year. A Bachelor of Science in Real Estate Management programme has also been introduced. “The university continues to initiate new programmes that fill training deficiencies in order to mitigate a shortage of human resource,” said Prof. Waudo.
Prof. Some challenged the graduands to adopt an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit that will enable them forge successful and fulfilling lives. “This way, you will contribute positively to the nation’s aspiration in the light of Kenya Vision 2030.”
Over the years, MKU has etched a reputation as a premier university for business management and entrepreneurship training. This was confirmed when the MKU School of Business and Economics won the World Corporate Universities Congress Award for excellence in training last month. Earlier this year, MKU graduated its pioneer class of the Enterprise Academy. Nine alumni with promising business ideas received KSh800,000 each to fund their start-ups.
Hon. Ahmed Noor Fahie, Minister of State for Education, Republic of Somaliland and Prof. Hussein Hassan Gulaid, Chief Executive Officer, National Commission for Higher Education in Somaliland also graced the occasion.
