MKU founder nominated for prestigious award

Simon N. Gicharu CBSSimon N. Gicharu CBSMount Kenya University founder Simon N. Gicharu, CBS, has been nominated for the prestigious 2014 Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship.

The awards recognize and award exceptional entrepreneurial leaders who serve as role models to Africa's aspiring entrepreneurs and demonstrate business excellence, innovation and profitability.

“I’m very delighted at this nomination,” says Mr Gicharu. “It shows that the efforts we have put in place as the MKU community are earning continental recognition.”

Mr Gicharu, who only recently was appointed by H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta as Chairman of Rural Electrification Authority, has been nominated in the Transformational Business Award and Outstanding Mature Business Award categories. The Transformational Business Award is for businesses that have created significant socio-economic impact in Africa under the direction of a notable business leader, while the Outstanding Mature Business Award is for established companies that are led by a strong business leader who has generated revenues between USD 5 million and USD 50 million.

Africa is rising. At no time in our history has the continent had so many opportunities for social-economic growth,” says Mr Gicharu. MKU has 12 Campuses in Kenya, one in Somaliland and another in Rwanda. “We hope to open Campuses in Uganda, South Sudan and Nigeria in near future,” says Mr Gicharu.

The winners will be announced during a finalists’ gala that will be held in Kigali, Rwanda in November.
The Awards were established in 2007 to recognize business leaders who demonstrate innovation, profitability and business excellence while serving as role models to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs. Since its inception, the Awards have attracted more than 7,000 applications from outstanding African businesses and awarded prizes of over USD 1.6 million to 30 leading African companies.
