Varsity launches its first radio station

Mount Kenya University (MKU) has launched a radio station in Kigali, Rwanda. Broadcasting on the frequency 107.9, the station is the first to be owned by the university. MKU has a license to operate an educational radio station in Thika town, the location of its main Campus.
The new radio station in Kigali, known as MKU Royal FM has a 20-kilometre broadcast radius. Its headed by Willie Mwangi, veteran Kenyan broadcast journalist. All the 12 presenters for the various shows broadcast throughout the day are Rwandese.
“Radio plays an important role in our lives and quality journalism is essential in educating, informing and entertaining,” said MKU Chairman Simon Gicharu, CBS, during the launch. “We hope to train the best broadcast journalists in East Africa.”
Prof Shyaka Anastase, Chief Executive Officer, Rwanda Governance Board said: “The MKU Royal FM will be an important tool in educating our young journalists and this will have a compound effect on long-lasting peace and cohesion in our beloved country. I say this because we all know the negative role broadcast media had on sparking the 1994 Genocide Against Tutsis. By opening this radio station, I can say without any fear of contradiction that Mount Kenya University is contributing to peace in Rwanda and indeed the Great Lakes region.”
MKU Royal FM also has a website, www.royalfm.rw on which its streaming live. This means that people outside its broadcast radius can reach its high quality programming, news and entertainment through the internet.
