Prof Kimathi Kigatiira, Dean, MKU School of Medicine, is touring several universities in Africa and America, to benchmark best practices for the soon-to-be-launched Medicine and Surgery programmes at MKU. Prof Kimathi is visiting Makerere University in Uganda, and Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, and Hubert Kairuki Memorial University both in Tanzania. He is also visiting the University of Cincinnati, and Xavier University in the USA. Both American universities have partnership agreements with MKU that pave way for student and academic exchange programmes, joint research and joint publication, amongst others. Meanwhile, a newly-constructed anatomy lab at Thika Level 5 hospital, which will be used by MKU School of Medicine students for their practical lessons is about to be opened. General Kago Funeral Home was constructed by MKU under a public-private partnership, at a cost of KSH300 million. “We will admit our first batch of students in September 2014,” says Prof Kimathi. The immediate former Director at MKU-Nairobi Campus, Prof Kimathi has been a medical doctor for 33 years.
