Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi takes over as the Vice-Chancellor of MKU

It was all glamour during the installation of Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi as the second Vice-Chancellor of Mount Kenya University today ( Friday, 29th January, 2021) at  Graduation Pavilion, Happy Valley Grounds. Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi is a distinguished scholar and leader, is a full Professor with a PhD in Physical Chemistry obtained in 1992 from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, University of London, England.

The installation ceremony was acclimatized by two events, first the robing of Prof. Deogratius  Jaganyi with MKU academic regalia composing the gown, hood and cap. Secondly, the handing over of University instruments of power from Prof. Stanley W. Waudo, 1st and founder Vice-Chancellor of MKU to Prof. David Serem the Chairman, University Council who in turn handed them over to the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi as the University Council, Board Members, staff and students witnessed.

In a one of its’ own event, the University Instruments of power were showcased to the congregation which attended the installation ceremony. This instruments are

  1. The University Academic Mace
  2. The University Logo
  3. The University Emblem
  4. The University Charter

Prof Jaganyi takes the leadership baton as the 2nd Vice-Chancellor of MKU from Prof Stanley Waudo, who has diligently served the University since its inception in 2008. Mount Kenya University was awarded a Letter of Interim Authority in 2008, received award of Charter in 2011 and has undergone sustainable growth post-charter.

Prof. Jaganyi will provide stewardship to achieve University’s mission, Vision and strategic goals through commitment to effectively serve the ever- changing needs of the stakeholders and is expected to;

  • Provide strategic leadership in the implementation of the University’s teaching and learning mandate through consistent provision of relevant academic programmes delivered in innovative settings, including enhanced e-learning as supported by state-of-the-art ICT infrastructure and technologies.
  • Enhance the University’s status as a premier Research and Innovation institution dedicated to the generation, dissemination and preservation of knowledge that effectively addresses the challenges facing communities, so as to transform lives. MKU is among the top 10 universities in research funding, and its research grants have grown from the internal Ksh1 million Board of Trustees’ Research grant to the current Ksh700 million won nationally and internationally.
  • Plan, develop and implement strategic institutional linkages, a pillar supporting the internationalisation of the University.
  • Oversee the implementation of the University’s 2020-2029 Strategic Plan.
  • Consolidate the University’s campuses into Centres of Excellence and ensure the proposed Mount Kigali University of Technology (MKUT) attains complete autonomy in its operations in the Republic of Rwanda.
