JHPIEGO an international, non-profit health organization affiliated with The Johns Hopkins University dedicated to improving the health of women and families partnered with Mount Kenya University through the Advanced Family Planning Project to increase access to Quality Family Planning services through the Private Pharmacy Channel. The Pre-service was identified as an important contributor to achieving the National Family Planning Goals including addressing unmet needs in Family Planning. The training of Pharmacists and Pharmaceutical Technologists was reviewed through a consultative process and the Core Curricula by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board has incorporated Family Planning as a core component to make graduates ready to provide quality Family Planning services.

Lecturers from the School of Pharmacy (Dr. Nicole Wamaitha and Dr. James Meroka) were trained and The Dean School of Pharmacy, Dr. Michael Mung’oma is a Trainer of Trainers for the approved Ministry of Health curriculum for Pharmacists and Pharmaceutical Technologists. MKU received an award in the Close-out ceremony on 13th October 2023 in Nairobi. MKU Pharmacy students benefit from continued education on current Family Planning service provision.
