Strengthening Educational Ties: Ugandan teachers visit MKU Nakuru Campus
A delegation of educators from Jinja, Uganda, recently visited Mount Kenya University Nakuru Campus on a benchmarking tour to Kenya, leaving both inspired and impressed by the institution’s world-class academic environment.
The team, accompanied by Mr. David Kigenyi and Mr. Meddy Mbelyo, both members of the Board of Governors at Jinja School, set out to explore innovative academic models and strengthen regional educational ties with MKU.
Upon arrival at MKU Nakuru Campus, the visitors received a warm welcome from Campus Management and were taken through an immersive tour of the university. From the outset, they were captivated by MKU’s modern infrastructure, cutting-edge technology, and strong commitment to research and quality education.
Some of the educators even mistook MKU for one of Kenya’s leading public universities — a clear reflection of its exceptional standards. Their surprise quickly turned into admiration upon learning that MKU is a privately chartered university making significant strides across East Africa, including Uganda.
“The campus is not only beautiful, but it also reflects a serious commitment to academic excellence,” one teacher remarked. “This is the kind of environment we dream of for our own students in Uganda.”
The visitors also praised MKU’s forward-looking investment in virtual education through the recently launched Open, Distance and Electronic Learning (ODeL) Centre in Uganda. The centre is designed to make higher education more accessible to Ugandan learners, especially those balancing work, family responsibilities, or living in remote areas.
“This initiative is not just timely, it’s transformational,” said Mr. Meddy Mbelyo. “By bringing learning closer to home through digital platforms, MKU is directly impacting the future of education in Uganda.”
Beyond appreciating the facilities and academic innovations, the tour also fostered a spirit of collaboration between educators from Uganda and Kenya. The delegation highlighted the value of such exchanges in driving innovation, professional growth, and institutional advancement across the region.
As the visit concluded, the teachers expressed glowing admiration for MKU’s leadership, vision, and growing regional impact — underscoring the university’s role as a hub of academic excellence and inspiration in East Africa.
