Thirty-five Mount Kenya University (MKU) students who received training from a German university are refining their startups at the university’s innovation and incubation centre.

The 35 are among 100 MKU students who underwent a 12-week intensive digital product development training by the Technical University of Munich under its ‘Africa Meets Bavaria’ programme. The programme targets African students and young professionals eager to build user-centred digital products and start their own ventures.

Three of the trainees, who are among the 35, secured an eight-week internship scholarship in Bavaria. They had the opportunity to learn, innovate, and intern with Europe’s leading start-up hub.

The MKU Head of Innovations, Intellectual Property and Community Engagement, Mr Donatus Njoroge, says the training is creating “a pipeline of innovation ambassadors who will mentor others within the university and beyond”.

The learners receive hands-on training, virtual mentorship, workshops, and select in-person internships in Germany. The goal is to empower students to not only participate in the global digital economy, but also to launch scalable ventures that address local challenges.

‘Africa Meets Bavaria’ is part of a broader international innovation exchange effort aimed at equipping African students with cutting-edge skills in digital product development, with a particular focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI).
