The event marked a powerful moment of reconnection, reflection, and recommitment to the values and legacy of Mount Kenya University.
A Celebration of People and Purpose
MKU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deogratious Jaganyi described the gathering as a “homecoming of hearts and a reunion of stories.” He emphasized that MKU’s journey of excellence has been built on dedication, innovation, and the success of its people.

He highlighted major university milestones, including growth in research, global partnerships, expanded digital learning platforms, and technological innovations such as the launch of a humanoid robot. He stressed that MKU’s greatest accomplishment is its alumni individuals who continue to impact society as professionals, leaders, creators, and innovators.
The Vice-Chancellor encouraged alumni not only to reconnect but also to recommit to supporting the university through mentorship, industry linkages, innovation, and active engagement with students and staff.
Building a Culture of Alumni Excellence
The Chairman of the Mount Kenya University Alumni Association (MKUAA), Mr. Gikera Kahara, welcomed alumni home and emphasized that a homecoming is both a return and a renewal. He noted that the gathering provided a unique opportunity to reconnect, share experiences, and strengthen the alumni community

In alignment with the theme “Celebrating Decades of Excellence,” the Chairman urged alumni to commit to a culture of excellence in all areas of life, academics, professional practice, community service, leadership, and personal development. He emphasized that individual excellence contributes to community and national excellence.
He outlined practical ways through which MKU alumni can make a difference, including:
- Supporting student internships and attachments
- Mentoring young professionals
- Sharing career and business opportunities
- Actively engaging in alumni programs
He further stressed the importance of integrity and character, noting that excellence must be anchored in strong moral values.
The Chairman also highlighted the Alumni Association’s guiding slogan: “Engage. Empower. Evolve.” This, he explained, represents a commitment to active participation, mutual support among graduates, and continuous innovation. He appreciated the university management for investing in the alumni association and confirmed that the association has been officially registered to enhance its impact
Resilience, Identity, and Habitual Excellence
The Guest Speaker, Ms. Ngina Kirori, an investigative journalist and MKU alumna, shared an inspiring, personal journey of self-discovery, resilience, and professional growth. She recalled her beginnings at MKU and how her studies in law helped shape her discipline, habits, and confidence.

She reinforced the idea that “excellence is a habit, not an act,” explaining how her legal background strengthened her work in investigative journalism, enabling her to contribute to impactful national and international stories. Her work has led to recognition, awards, and a prestigious fellowship at Oxford University.
Kirori encouraged students and alumni to remain honest with themselves, embrace change, and be guided by values, community, and purpose. She also expressed pride in MKU’s growing global recognition, including its inclusion in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.
A Reaffirmation of Lifelong Belonging

The Great Homecoming was more than a reunion it was a renewal of purpose and identity. It reaffirmed the unbreakable bond between MKU and its graduates, reminding all in attendance that MKU is not just an institution, but a lifelong community.
Through reflection, celebration, networking and inspiration, the event strengthened the university’s vision of a dynamic alumni network committed to mentorship, excellence, and service to society.
As emphasized by the day’s speakers, excellence is not an endpoint, but a continuous journey shaped by discipline, unity, integrity, and purpose.
