Mount Kenya University’s School of Education continues to shine through its students, with Teacher Dorcas, currently serving at Manguo Primary School ECDE, setting a new benchmark in early childhood training.
Her newly established CBC model classroom is being hailed as a one-stop hub for holistic learning. From “seeing is believing” to “learning by doing,” Teacher Dorcas has recreated real-life experiences for young learners — even simulating scenarios like withdrawing money from an ATM, a rare experience in rural settings.
“All that you see here in this classroom is as a result of the quality learning I have gained at Mount Kenya University. The lecturers are very supportive, pushing us to think beyond the box and design practical solutions that transform learning,” says Dorcas.
The classroom features interactive sessions ranging from meals, houses, malls, fields, nutrition, and a numbers corner — all designed to make learning both fun and practical.
Her creativity has not gone unnoticed. The Laikipia County Government has recognized her efforts, with Madam Rahab, the Ward ECDE Coordinator, praising her approach:
“Her classes are fun and engaging. Children enjoy learning since the environment is conducive and very informative. Truly, out of sight is out of mind — and through this model classroom, the learners get to see, touch, and experience knowledge firsthand.”
Encouraged by this success, the County Government is now considering rolling out similar model CBC ECDE classrooms across the region and has expressed interest in having Teacher Dorcas train fellow educators.
