On March 19, 2026, staff from Mount Kenya University Kisii Campus and Equip Africa Institute participated in a tree planting exercise at Gakero DEB Primary School in Gucha Sub-County. The initiative was organized by the Kisii County Government Department of Forestry to commemorate the International Day of Forests.

The activity brought together education and community stakeholders in a shared effort to promote environmental conservation and sustainable land management. During the exercise, the team planted close to 500 trees, comprising a mix of indigenous and fruit tree species aimed at supporting ecosystem restoration and providing long-term environmental and economic benefits to the local community.

The tree planting initiative forms part of broader efforts to rehabilitate degraded environments and promote climate resilience. Through such activities, the institutions reaffirm their commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement.

Mount Kenya University continues to champion climate action through various sustainability initiatives, including nurturing and planting more trees within its botanical garden and other campus spaces. These efforts contribute to national and global campaigns aimed at combating climate change while instilling environmental responsibility among students and the wider community.
