Varsity introduces scheme to reward alumni who are impacting society in special ways

Mount Kenya University unveils the first recipient of its Annual Alumni Impact Award, an initiative established to recognize and support graduates who are making a significant difference in their communities.

The winner of the prestigious competition will receive a grant of USD 50,000 (approximately KSh 6.5 million) to expand and scale their impact-driven initiatives. According to MKU Founder and Chairman, Prof. Simon Gicharu, the award is the University’s way of celebrating alumni who continue to contribute meaningfully to national development using the knowledge and skills acquired during their studies.

“MKU has produced leaders, innovators and change-makers across multiple sectors. It is time to formally honour those who are using their education to transform lives and communities,” said Prof. Gicharu.

The University Council Chairman, Dr. Vincent Gaitho, noted that the Alumni Award Policy was approved to institutionalise recognition of outstanding graduates.

“This award is a way to celebrate alumni who have gone above and beyond in leadership, innovation and service to society,” he explained.

At the same time, the university is strengthening efforts to empower its current students by enhancing their employability and capacity to create impact after graduation. As part of this strategy, MKU is investing in modern, high-demand areas of training and research.

Last month, the university acquired and commissioned the UBTECH Walker E Educational Humanoid Robot, a state-of-the-art facility that will support students in advancing their knowledge and skills in artificial intelligence. “The humanoid robot will play a central role in promoting AI education, robotics literacy, interdisciplinary research, student innovation and teacher training,” said Prof. Gicharu.

In addition, MKU recently established the Malindi Maritime Academy, which is now fully accredited by the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA). The academy offers specialised maritime and shipping programmes aligned with the growing demands of the industry.

Beyond academics, the university continues to invest in co-curricular activities such as sports, creative arts and leadership programmes, ensuring students receive holistic development and opportunities to nurture their diverse talents.

Through these initiatives, Mount Kenya University reaffirms its commitment to producing globally competitive graduates while creating platforms that celebrate excellence, innovation and positive societal impact.
