Mount Kenya University (MKU) continues to stand by its commitment to making education accessible and empowering determined students to achieve their dreams. today, Prof. Simon Gicharu, Chairman of the Board of Directors at MKU, presented upkeep, learning equipment, and study resources to Milly Nafula, a 4th-year student pursuing the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree at MKU Medical School.
A Journey of Resilience and Determination
Milly’s academic journey is nothing short of inspiring. After sitting her KCSE examination, she was unable to pursue higher education due to financial constraints. For 15 years, she put her dream of becoming a doctor on hold while working in a posho mill to raise her children.
In 2021, her story caught the attention of many Kenyans and moved the MKU leadership to act. Through the MKU Foundation, Milly was awarded a full scholarship to pursue her dream course — a six-year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery programme.
Today, Milly is in her 4th year of study, having successfully progressed through the rigorous medical training journey.

Chairman’s Assurance and Encouragement
While presenting the support package, Prof. Gicharu congratulated Milly for her academic excellence and resilience. He assured her of continued support to ensure she successfully completes her studies:
“Milly’s story is a powerful testimony that with determination, support, and opportunity, no dream is too big. At MKU, we are committed to ensuring that deserving students are given the chance to realize their full potential.”
Gratitude from Milly
Milly expressed deep appreciation for the financial, material, and moral support she has continued to receive from the University.
“I highly appreciate the provision of equipment to support my clinical years. This will ease my training and improve my interaction with patients during clerkships. I give my assurance to do my best and become a doctor who will serve our nation and beyond,” she said.
She also encouraged others facing difficult circumstances not to give up on their aspirations:
“I am living proof that where there is a will, there is a way. With resilience and determination, challenges can be overcome, and dreams can be achieved.”
MKU’s Commitment to Educational Access
Through the MKU Foundation and other initiatives, the University continues to open doors for students from diverse backgrounds, reaffirming its role as a driver of social mobility and community empowerment.
Milly’s story is not just about personal success — it is also about the transformative impact of higher education when paired with institutional support.
