
The newly signed 5 year – long partnership deal will greatly support the shared mutual interests of the two institutions in a number of cross-cutting areas towards the support of the Kenya Vision 2030, the East African Community’s Vision 2050, and the Sustainable Development Goals with a special reference to SDG 9 on Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure in line with MKU’s competitively achieved 2025 to 2027 status as the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) Hub Chair for SDG 9.
Specific areas of engagement will include, Research and Development (Collaboration in innovative field expeditions, data collection, documentation and analysis, including establishment of shared innovation labs for scientific research and analysis); Innovation and Technology Transfer (Knowledge sharing through joint conferences, workshops, seminars, exhibitions, publications, community and public engagement initiatives); Development of joint curricular and co-trainings in the heritage sector, and other relevant academic programmes; joint Capacity Building among other areas

NMK, a multi-disciplinary institution, whose role is to collect, preserve, research, document and present Kenya’s past and present cultural and natural resources (heritage) under the Museums and Heritage Act of 2006. This is for the purposes of enhancing knowledge, appreciation, respect and sustainable utilization of these resources for the benefit of Kenya and the world for now and posterity. NMK performs its functions through various functional units. In this regard, the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) seeks to further both its institutional mission and that of the collaborating institution through joint initiatives. These may include joint resource mobilization, sharing of expertise, pursuit of funding opportunities, and promotion of data exchange, technology transfer and collaborative research publications.
