MKU Strengthens Global Research Credentials with GFGP Certification and Grant-Writing Capacity Development

Mount Kenya University (MKU) has achieved another major milestone in its research and innovation agenda after receiving the prestigious Good Financial Grant Practice (GFGP) Award, reaffirming the University’s commitment to excellence, accountability, and international best practices in research grant management.

The certification follows a rigorous independent assessment conducted by KPMG in 2025, which evaluated the University’s financial management systems, procurement processes, governance structures, and internal controls. Developed by the African Academy of Sciences and Global Grant Community, the GFGP standard is among the world’s first international benchmarks for research grant financial management. The award signals to international funders that MKU has the capacity to manage research funds transparently, efficiently, and in line with globally recognized standards, strengthening the University’s position as a trusted research partner.

In a parallel effort to strengthen research capacity, 46 MKU faculty members have been selected to participate in the Afrique Research Support Hub (ARSH) Grant-Writing Programme, a capacity-building initiative by the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC). The programme equips researchers with the skills to develop competitive grant proposals, attract external funding, and build international research collaborations.

Together, the GFGP Award and the ARSH programme demonstrate MKU’s strategic investment in strengthening its research ecosystem, enhancing institutional credibility, and positioning the University as a leading hub for research, innovation, and international partnerships.
