Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph Denge Galgalo, Graduation held on: 7TH AUGUST, 2026
The Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph Denge Galgalo is the Provincial Secretary of the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) and Assistant Bishop of ACK Diocese of All Saints. He is based at the ACK Provincial Secretariat in Nairobi, providing administrative, strategic and institutional leadership.
As Provincial Secretary, he is the Chief Administrative Officer of the Anglican Church of Kenya and oversights financial and human resource functions, strategic coordination, resource development and the legal custodianship of Church properties. In this role, he supports the Archbishop, the Provincial Synod, the House of Bishops and other provincial organs in advancing the mission, governance and administrative work of ACK.
Prof. Galgalo is a leading Anglican theologian with a PhD in Systematic Theology from the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. His theological formation has shaped a vocation that integrates scholarship, ministry, institutional leadership and public service.
Before taking up his current provincial responsibilities, he served in various senior academic and administrative positions at St. Paul’s University including as the Vice-Chancellor for 10 years. His leadership at St. Paul’s University was marked by institutional growth, academic development, infrastructure expansion and enhanced governance and sustainability systems.
His professional experience spans more than two decades in university-level teaching, research, supervision, mentorship, administration, curriculum development, quality assurance, resource mobilisation, stakeholder engagement and institutional development.
His scholarly interests include systematic theology, African Christianity, contextual and inter-contextual theologies, inculturation Christologies, theological education and church relations. He has supervised academic work and published widely in these areas, contributing to theological formation within Kenya, Africa and the wider Anglican Communion.
His contribution to global Anglican thought is reflected in his participation in major theological and ecclesial bodies including Inter-Anglican Theological and Doctrinal Commission, the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Panel of Reference, the World Council of Churches Commission for Ecumenical Theological Education, GAFCON’s Theological Reference and currently a member of the Inter-Anglican Standing Commission on Unity, Faith and Order.
His major publications include: African Christianity: The Stranger Within; Theological Education in Africa, Theology, Society and Disability and other works on Anglican theology including “Anglican Theology” in the St. Andrews Encyclopaedia of Theology, a scholarly resource text published by the University of St. Andrews, UK. Also, a contributor to Ford’s The Modern Theologians, a comprehensive series on major theologians from different periods since 1918.
His contribution to the Church has received international recognition. In 2020, the Archbishop of Canterbury awarded him the Cross of St. Augustine for services to the Anglican Communion. Selwyn College, University of Cambridge, described him as “a leading Anglican African theologian, an entrepreneurial Vice-Chancellor and a significant influence within the Anglican Communion.”
His life commitment is to see a Church that is spiritually grounded, intellectually serious, administratively sound and socially responsive, which he promotes through the Anglican Church of Kenya’s governance, mission coordination, theological witness and enhancing institutional capacity.
