29th Graduation Ceremony Speech By Dr. Vincent Gaitho, Chairman, University Council

Preliminaries

Mr. Chancellor Sir,

I take this opportunity on behalf of the University Council to sincerely thank all those who have honored our invitation and joined us in celebrating Mount Kenya University's 29^th Graduation Ceremony.

The Graduating Class of August 2026

Today marks a significant milestone in the lives of our graduands. Graduation is not merely the end of an academic journey; it is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to leadership, responsibility, service, and continuous learning. We gather to celebrate your achievements, resilience, and determination, as well as cheer up the infinite possibilities that lie ahead because we believe in you.

Dear Graduands, you are entering a world that is increasingly interconnected, dynamic, and complex. Yet within these challenges lie countless opportunities to make a meaningful difference. As professionals and leaders, you have the power to drive social transformation, promote ethical governance, and advance inclusivity in every sphere of life. Your education at MKU has equipped you not only with academic qualifications but also with the ability to think critically, solve problems creatively, and contribute positively to society. Your time at MKU has exposed you to diversity and has transformed that shy freshman/lady to a bold, confident global civil servant raring to go make stand in the gap of social, economic and political development.

Go Forth Because You Have Been Called

You are called upon to confront challenges such as poverty, inequality, environmental degradation, technological disruption, and social injustice with courage, innovation, and compassion. Remember that meaningful change often begins with informed and determined individual willing to act. Let your knowledge serve a purpose beyond personal success by uplifting communities and creating a better future for all.

As we release you to the world of work and service, bear in mind that ethical governance remains central to sustainable development and societal transformation. Always remember integrity, accountability, transparency, and service to others are values that should guide your decisions, whether in public service, business, academia, or community leadership. The world is not short of talent nor of opportunities; it is therefore in greater need of principled leaders who choose honesty over convenience and stewards of common good above personal gain. As graduates of this great university, I challenge you to uphold these values and become role models in your professions and communities.

Equally important is the promotion of inclusivity. Our graduating class reflects diverse cultures, backgrounds, beliefs, abilities, and experiences. This diversity is a source of strength and innovation. As ambassadors of MKU, you must champion fairness, respect, and equal opportunity, ensuring that no one is left behind. Inclusive societies and institutions are essential for lasting peace, social cohesion, and sustainable development.

Suffice it to say, as you join the body of MKU Alumni, I invite you to always remain connected to your Alma Mater and therefore take advantage of opportunities available to advance your professional and career development as well as academic progression.

Conclusion

In conclusion, may the MKU 29^th graduation theme: - "Youths as Architects of Social Change, Ethical Governance and Inclusivity” become your rallying call as you transit to your next phase of life. Always remember, your voice matters and your leadership is needed now more than ever. Go forth as agents of positive change, champions of ethical leadership, and advocates for inclusivity. Carry the values of Mount Kenya University with pride, serve with integrity, and remain lifelong learners committed to transforming lives and communities.
