Mount Kenya University Kisii ODeL Centre, in partnership with Equip Africa Institute and Oasis Hospital, has strengthened its commitment to community wellness through a free medical camp that benefited more than 300 residents.
Held on 10th September 2026 at the Kisii County Commissioner’s Grounds, the medical camp was conducted under the theme “Healthy Community, Happy Future.” The initiative brought together University staff, students, healthcare professionals, government representatives, partners and members of the local community.
The camp was officially opened by Kisii County Commissioner Mr. James Kamau, who joined other stakeholders in supporting the initiative aimed at promoting preventive healthcare and healthy living.
Free Healthcare Services
The medical camp provided community members with access to a range of free health screening, consultation and health education services.
The services included:
- General medical consultation
- Body Mass Index (BMI) assessment
- Random Blood Sugar (RBS) testing
- Blood Pressure (BP) screening
- Orthopedic consultation
- Dental consultation
- Nutrition consultation
- Mental health screening and consultation
The initiative provided an opportunity for residents to better understand their health status while receiving guidance on preventive healthcare and healthy lifestyle practices.
Promoting Education and Community Engagement
The engagement demonstrated how community outreach initiatives can create meaningful connections between the University and the communities it serves while opening pathways to higher education.
Strengthening Partnerships
The successful medical camp strengthened collaboration between MKU Kisii ODeL Centre, Equip Africa Institute, Oasis Hospital and other stakeholders, reinforcing the importance of partnerships in addressing community needs.
The initiative also enhanced MKU’s visibility and demonstrated the University’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), community engagement and holistic community development.
Through such initiatives, MKU continues to extend its impact beyond the classroom by contributing to the wellbeing and development of communities.
Building a Healthier Community
The free medical camp underscores the value of preventive healthcare and accessible health services in promoting healthier communities.
