Mount Kenya University (MKU) has achieved a remarkable milestone in the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, being ranked among the best private universities in Kenya and ninth nationally.
This marks the first time MKU has appeared in the prestigious global ranking — a testament to its commitment to academic excellence, impactful research, innovation, and international collaboration.
Higher education institutions are ranked based on performance indicators that are grouped into five areas: teaching (learning environment and student experience),research environment (volume, income and reputation), research quality (citation impact, research excellence and research influence), international outlook (staff, students and research partnerships ) and industry (innovation, income and patents).
In total, 11 Kenyan universities made it to this year’s global list, underscoring the growing strength of Kenya’s higher education sector.
MKU prides itself as a home for innovation and entrepreneurship. The University’s Innovation and Incubation Centre is fully equipped to help students transform their ideas into tangible solutions. Here, innovators receive expert guidance through project development, patenting processes, and market rollout, ensuring their creations make real impact in society.
The University also boasts multiple Centres of Excellence in research across its campuses. At the Thika Campus, the Centre for Malaria Elimination focuses on research aimed at solving community health challenges such as malaria and other tropical diseases. Meanwhile, researchers at MKU Nakuru Campus are driving agricultural innovation, with projects such as the Fruit Fly Bait Initiative addressing food security and sustainable crop production.
As a hub for international exchange, MKU participates in the Erasmus Programme and maintains direct linkages with universities in Europe and America, offering students opportunities for cultural exchange, research collaboration, and global exposure.
