Mount Kenya University through its College of Health Sciences and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, successfully conducted a three-day Free Medical Camp at Jomvu Primary School in Mombasa County from June 12 to 14, 2026, benefiting hundreds of residents from Jomvu and surrounding communities.
The medical camp, organized in partnership with the County Government of Mombasa and other stakeholders, was officially graced by the Senator for Mombasa County, Hon. Mohammed Faki, and the Member of Parliament for Jomvu Constituency, Hon. Bady Twalib, who commended the university for its commitment to improving community health and wellbeing. Hon. Bady is a bachelor of business management alumni of MKU.
The event commenced on Friday, June 12, with public health education and awareness sessions aimed at empowering community members with knowledge on disease prevention, healthy lifestyles, and the importance of seeking timely medical care.
As part of the outreach programme, MKU Health Sciences students visited neighboring schools where they conducted health education and awareness talks on personal hygiene and cleanliness, mental health, drug and substance abuse prevention, and career mentorship. The sessions provided learners with valuable life skills and health information while inspiring them to pursue careers in the health sector and other professional fields.

The Department of Dental and Oral Health also played a key role in the outreach activities by educating students and community members on proper oral hygiene practices and preventive dental care. To encourage good oral health habits, the department distributed free toothbrushes and toothpaste to learners and members of the community.
Over the weekend, residents received a wide range of free healthcare services, including medical assessments, health guidance and counseling, treatment services, cancer screening, dental and eyes check-ups and referrals where necessary. The camp attracted individuals of all ages, many of whom expressed appreciation for the opportunity to access quality healthcare services at no cost.

Speaking during the event, the Principal of the College of Health Sciences, Dr. Josphat Njuguna, commended the students and healthcare professionals who volunteered their time and expertise to serve the community. He applauded the students for their dedication and for successfully organizing and participating in the annual medical camp, noting that the initiative has become an important tradition within the College. Dr. Njuguna recalled that last year’s medical camp was held at Tononoka Grounds and expressed optimism about expanding similar outreach programmes in the future. He emphasized that such initiatives provide students with invaluable hands-on experience while enabling the university to make a meaningful impact on the health and wellbeing of communities.
Speaking during the event, the leaders praised the collaboration between MKU, the County Government of Mombasa, and development partners in addressing healthcare challenges at the grassroots level. They emphasized the importance of preventive healthcare and community outreach initiatives in improving public health outcomes.

As a university committed to transforming society through education, research, and community service, Mount Kenya University continues to champion initiatives that improve lives and strengthen communities. The success of the Jomvu Free Medical Camp demonstrates the university’s dedication to making quality healthcare accessible to vulnerable populations and promoting healthier communities across Kenya.
The university extends its gratitude to all partners, healthcare workers, students, volunteers, and community leaders whose support made the initiative a success.
Together, we are promoting healthier communities.
