Mount Kenya University (MKU) Pwani Cluster, comprising the Mombasa Campus, Malindi ODeL Centre, and the MKU Maritime Academy, on Saturday, 13 June 2026, donated two laptops, T-shirts, caps, dustbins, and other learning materials to the Young Seafarers Community Based Organization.
The donations were presented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Administration, Planning and Institutional Advancement, Prof. Peter G. Kirira, flanked by the management team of Mombasa Campus.
The Young Seafarers CBO, operating under the Swahilipot Hub Foundation, is a youth-led initiative that mentors, trains, and connects coastal youth to careers in the maritime, shipping, and seafaring sectors.
The donation reflects MKU’s commitment to advancing maritime education and supporting youth development within Kenya’s growing blue economy. The laptops and other materials will strengthen the club’s training, mentorship, and outreach activities.

In February this year, MKU Maritime Academy boosted Kenya’ s maritime training capacity with the installation of a modern bridge simulator facility valued at KSh.30 million, as the institution intensifies efforts to tap into the largely underdeveloped maritime sector.
The high-tech simulator is designed to replicate real-life ship bridge operations, offering trainees practical exposure in navigation, vessel handling, safety management and emergency response under varying sea and weather conditions.
MKU Maritime Academy continues to play a vital role in preparing aspiring seafarers for employment in the global maritime industry. The Academy offers internationally recognized training aligned with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). Programmes include Basic Safety Training, Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF), Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PSCRB), Medical First Aid, and other mandatory maritime courses that equip trainees with the competencies required for safe and effective service at sea.

Through such initiatives and partnerships, MKU remains committed to bridging the gap between training and employment by empowering coastal youth with the skills, certifications, and opportunities needed to pursue successful maritime careers.
