On Sunday, 6 September 2026, students and alumni of the Millennium Campus Network (MCN) at Mount Kenya University came together at MKU Thika Campus to mark the commencement of the final 90 days of International Volunteerism Year (IVY) 2026.
The event brought together Millennium Fellowship students and past MCN beneficiaries, celebrating their contribution to student-led leadership, community service and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
A key highlight was the induction of visiting undergraduate students from Germany, Taiwan, Italy and Sierra Leone into student-driven community volunteerism platforms at MKU Thika Campus. These platforms include:
🔹 Millennium Fellowship – a semester-long leadership development programme for undergraduate students, focused on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and community impact.
🔹 Student-LEOs – a youth leadership and service platform through which students are inducted into leadership and community service by the Lions Club International, Thika-Kilimambogo.
The gathering provided an opportunity for students from different countries and backgrounds to connect, learn and explore ways of turning their university experience into meaningful community impact.
At MKU, student development goes beyond the classroom. Through volunteerism, leadership, service and global engagement, students are empowered to become active contributors to their communities and champions of sustainable development.
As the world enters the final 90 days of International Volunteerism Year 2026, the message from MKU Thika Campus is clear: Volunteerism is not simply about giving time. It is about giving leadership, building communities and creating lasting impact.
