Mount Kenya University (MKU) has flagged off the sixth cohort of healthcare apprentices set to depart for Germany, marking another milestone in the University’s commitment to creating global career opportunities for its graduates.
The cohort was flagged off by MKU Council Chairman and Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Vincent Gaitho, and Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi, during a ceremony that celebrated the students’ achievement and the partnerships that have made the international career pathway possible.
Through a strategic partnership between Mount Kenya University and Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences, Germany, the programme prepares Kenyan healthcare professionals for apprenticeship opportunities within the German healthcare system. The initiative has been running since 2023 and has progressively expanded its reach, providing students with professional training, international exposure and pathways into employment.
At the heart of the programme is the Centre for Professional Development, whose training and mentorship have played a critical role in preparing the apprentices for their transition to Germany.
Dr. Josephine Thua, Centre for Professional Development Director, has been instrumental in the training and preparation of the students, supporting them as they acquire the professional competencies and readiness required for their next stage of their careers.
The programme also recognises the importance of language and cultural preparation in enabling successful integration into the German healthcare environment. DAAD Kenya has supported the initiative by allocating a German language trainer to assist in preparing the students for their transition to Germany.
German language proficiency is an integral component of MKU’s Germany pathway, with the University offering German language training from beginner to advanced levels as part of its internationalisation and employability initiatives.
The partnership with Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences has created a structured pathway from training in Kenya to paid apprenticeship opportunities in German healthcare institutions. MKU’s programme has also involved German partners supporting students with professional integration and mentorship after their arrival in Germany.
More than 100 students have benefited from the programme, with participants securing paid apprenticeship opportunities in German healthcare facilities. Several apprentices have subsequently transitioned into permanent employment, demonstrating the potential of international partnerships to translate education and skills development into meaningful career opportunities.
The departure of the sixth cohort therefore represents more than a send-off. It is a reflection of MKU’s growing international footprint, its commitment to graduate employability, and its role in connecting Kenyan talent with global opportunities.
