Mount Kenya University (MKU) has strengthened its commitment to practical, competency-based healthcare education through a partnership with Nakuru County Referral and Teaching Hospital (NCRTH) to expand clinical training opportunities for health sciences students.

The partnership was formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between MKU, NCRTH and the Department of Health, establishing a framework for clinical attachments, internships and hands-on learning within a functional healthcare environment.

The hospital was represented by Santosh Davaraj, Hospital Director, Nakuru County Referral and Teaching Hospital, who joined the institutional leadership in advancing the partnership aimed at strengthening clinical training and healthcare education. The collaboration reflects the hospital’s commitment to supporting the training of future healthcare professionals by providing opportunities for practical learning, skills development and professional mentorship within a real healthcare setting.

Through the collaboration, MKU students will gain valuable practical experience in real patient-care settings, working under the guidance of experienced healthcare professionals. The exposure will enable learners to apply classroom knowledge, develop essential clinical competencies and prepare for the demands of professional healthcare practice.

The partnership underscores MKU’s commitment to producing competent, industry-ready graduates whose skills respond to the evolving needs of the healthcare sector. By bridging the gap between academic instruction and clinical practice, the collaboration will contribute to strengthening healthcare education and preparing a skilled workforce capable of supporting quality patient care.

For NCRTH, the agreement reinforces its role as a referral, teaching and training institution, while providing an opportunity to contribute to the development of future healthcare professionals and strengthen healthcare service delivery in Nakuru County.

The MKU delegation comprised Dr. Alfred Owino, Director of Nakuru Campus; Mr. Boniface Murigi, Director of Communication and Corporate Affairs; and Dr. John Kisengi of the School of Pharmacy.

The partnership reflects the shared commitment of MKU and its healthcare partners to strengthening university-industry collaboration, enhancing experiential learning and translating academic knowledge into meaningful impact on patient care and community health.

Through strategic partnerships with healthcare institutions, MKU continues to advance practical training and nurture the next generation of skilled healthcare professionals.
