Varsity to establish a Confucius Institute

SEPTEMBER, 17, 2014

Mount Kenya University will establish a Confucius Institute at its main campus in Thika. This follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the institution and Jinggangshan University of the People’s Republic of China. The Institute will equip students with knowledge on the Chinese language and customs. “This is particularly timely considering the degree of engagement with the East, and in almost all sectors of the economy,” said the MKU Vice Chancellor Prof. Stanley Waudo. Chinese is spoken by about 1.2 billion people in the world. The two universities will also partner in provision of formal credit courses and professional development in Humanities & Social Sciences, Economics & Business, and Engineering. MKU and Jinggangshan University will also collaborate in research.

The high profile delegation from Jinggangshan University included Prof Zhang Taicheng, (President), Du Cheng (Deputy Dean & Associate Professor, Office of International Cooperation & Exchange), Guo Xinchun (Associate Professor, School of Chemical & Chemical Engineering), Prof. Huang Qiuru (School of Business), and Zhan Suping (Associate Professor, School of Humanities).
